Parrott appointed Assistant Professor at UNC-SOM
Congrats to DeSimone group postdoc, Dr. Matthew Parrott, on his new appointment as an Assistant Professor in
UNC's Department of Radiology in the School of Medicine! With his extensive background in nanotechnology, nuclear chemistry, and molecular imaging, Dr. Parrott will focus on rapidly screening polymers as potential imaging agents and optimizing the delivery of nanoparticles to improve drug efficacy. In addition to his new role, Dr. Parrott will continue to collaborate with the DeSimone group and the Carolina Institute for Nanomedicine to assist with the development of nanoparticle-platforms on campus.

Liquidia releases video, YouTube channel
In 2004 Prof. DeSimone founded
Liquidia Technologies based on
the PRINT technology invented at UNC. Last week Liquidia launched
a YouTube channel, featuring a new video. “It's exciting to see our work in the lab being translated to real world applications,” said Tammy Shen, current DeSimone group grad student pursuing a PhD in Molecular Pharmaceutics. “The video features some of the benefits that a collaboration with Liquidia offers, and provides a unique opportunity to envision where our own projects will go,” added Cathy Fromen, who is working toward a PhD in Chemical Engineering. Both Shen and Fromen are responsible for images in the video.

Detter wins undergrad research excellence awardCongratulations to Matthew Detter, the 2011 recipient of the James Maguire Memorial Award, recognizing outstanding undergraduate research and academic excellence. A member of the DeSimone group since June 2010, Detter's research has focused on the co-encapsulation of a steroidal hormone and a superparamagnetic targeting agent within high aspect ratio PRINT nanoparticles. The properties of these particles demonstrate promise for the localized and sustained treatment of arthritis, asthma, and other inflammatory conditions.

Tim has also been named a finalist for the 2011 DSM Polymer Technology Award, which recognizes excellence in innovative PhD research in polymer technology. The theme for the 2011 award is Polymers at the Biology-Materials Science Interface. The winner will be selected at the Fall National ACS Meeting in Denver.

Wang receives $3M start-up; will join BCM faculty

Congratulations to DeSimone Group postdoc, Dr. Jin Wang, who will join the
Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) faculty this coming fall as a
Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) Scholar in Cancer Research. Wang is the recipient of a $2 million CPRIT award for new faculty, which recognizes investigators with the ability to make outstanding contributions to the field of cancer research, promote inquiry into new areas, foster collaboration, and stimulate growth in the field. A $1 million match from Baylor brings the total to $3 million. Wang will serve as assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology at BCM, member of the NCI-designated Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center, and adjunct faculty in the Department of Bioengineering at Rice University.
